Turning ambition into action…our Women's Health Programme
The first national plan for women's health, published in 2022, sets out a 10-year ambition to boost the health and wellbeing of all women and girls.
Here in the North East and North Cumbria we are turning our ambition for women's health into action – using the strength, collaboration, and energy we have, to create our own implementation plan and make the changes we want to see now and for future generations.
If we can make things better for girls and women, everyone benefits.
Change is already happening from new women's health hubs, better menopause support to improve care for breast pain, fertility, and maternal health.
But there is still more we want to do.
An update on women's health
The Women’s Health Programme has made significant progress.
At our March 2026 Board meeting, Dame Lesley Regan, Women’s Health Ambassador for England, alongside Claire Riley, Chief of Corporate Services at North East and North Cumbria Integrated Care Board, provided an update on our Women's Health programme and discussed the challenges facing women and girls.

Women's Health Innovation Conference 2024
We held our second Women's Health Conference, which focused on innovation in women's health. Over 270 attendees spotlighted efforts to address women's health issues. A new study, launched in collaboration with the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities, provided essential data and identified areas for further action. The session's activities will contribute to the regional women's health implementation plan, set to launch in early autumn.

Spotlight on our innovative women
Following the theme of International Women's Day 2024, we want to shine a light on some of the innovative women in our region's healthcare throughout history, from setting up health advisory clinics, to founding the first general medical practice in Newcastle.
